Full of families, it’s a rare sight if you don’t see people of all ages outside enjoying the beautiful Southern California sunshine! Boasting many activities, this quant Newport nook is filled with liveliness. Whether riding bikes on the trail located directly above the back bay, runners training for their next marathon, or paddle boarders at the NAC, this is a neighborhood perfect for those who are always looking for a little something fun to occupy their time!
1. Walk the Castaways Trail
Walking the Castaways trail adjacent to Dover Shores, is a locals’ best kept secret! This trail boasts gorgeous views not only of Newport Back Bay but a majority of the Harbor as well. Whether you like to get a workout in early morning or you would rather walk and unwind after a long day at the office, this place is the best kept secret to watch the sunrise and the sunset overlooking Newport Harbor. In addition, this trail is connected to Castaways Park. Although this park doesn’t have a playground or restrooms, what it does have is so much better! At the end of the trail overlooking all of Newport Harbor is a memorial dedicated to the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines. This memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day in 2008, on May 26. This memorial serves as a reminder to all of the community to take a second to appreciate all Military personnel that have fought for our country.
2. Paddle Boarding is a Must
Whether you’re an avid paddle boarder, or have always been wanting to give it a try, the Newport Aquatic Center, better known as the NAC has paddle boards you can rent! If paddle boarding just isn’t your thing, they offer kayak rentals for one or two people. There are no reservations or group booking rates, however, rentals are available all day as they are at a first come first serve basis. In addition the Newport Aquatic Center offers monthly and annual memberships including individual and family plans at a more discounted rate. These memberships offer use of club equipment including:
- Stand Up Paddle Boards
- Rowing Shells
- On-Site Weight Room
- Rowing Machines
- Locker Rooms

3. Bike to Breakfast
One of the best things about the Dover Shores Community is how centrally located it is. You can hop on your bike and cruise just up the street to some delicious breakfast options! Some local favorites include Cafe Gratitude and Haute Cakes. Cafe Gratitude located on the corner of Westcliff Drive, serves up some delicious Vegan meals for not only Breakfast, but Lunch and Dinner too! If you decide to make an adventure of your Saturday morning, make sure to try the French toast, aka “Thrilled”. Haute Cakes, located just a couple of doors down is another local favorite! Although the name might give it away, while you’re there you must try the Orange Ricotta Haute Cakes. If you’re on the search for something a little lighter, try the Mona’s Breakfast consisting of egg whites, spinach and house made salsa verde, a bowl of GF oats, berries and LF milk.

4. Bike to the Peninsula
Looking to further your Saturday morning bike ride? Well, from Dover Shores it’s not too far of a bike ride to the Balboa Ferry. Hop on your bike via the Castaways trail. Once the trail spits you out onto Dover, take a left on PCH and a right on Bayside. Once Bayside runs into Marine, take a right and follow the signs the Balboa Ferry. Soon enough, you’ll be on the Peninsula in no time! Not only is this a great workout, but who can’t resist the people watching on a gorgeous sunny Saturday morning. On your way, make sure to stop and grab a Balboa Bar from Dad’s Donut and Bakery Shop, they are to die for!

5. Enjoy a Summer BBQ with Your Neighbors
Not everyone knows this but, the community of Dover Shores has access to not one, but two private beaches open exclusively to residents of the community. Every Tuesday night during the Summer months, residents will co-host a barbecue catered with delicious local eats held at Larry’s Beach. This is completely free and open to all Dover Shores residents. If you’re new in town, this is a great was to meet and enjoy a Tuesday night get together with you neighbors.
